I just purchased my lathe and have started on some projects. I plan to turn hardwood bowls, vases, and lamps. I was drawn to woodturning after watching many YouTube turning videos. Turning is yet another way to celebrate the grain, color, and beauty of wood. The design is more free form, because as a turner you don't know what is really inside a log or bowl blank until you start to explore, and changes in grain, knots, or color will make a turner alter the shape of an object to take advantage of or avoid issues discovered in the wood.
Like my furniture work, I already enjoy the mix of design and technology. One must be able to deign. but also be aware of the use and care of machinery. The sharpening of turning tools is also critical to smooth and safe cuts.
